The Real ROI of a Professional Website for Small Businesses
Craftnor · 11 March 2026 · 5 min read
A website is one of the few business costs where the return is genuinely calculable in advance. Most people never do the sum.
The sum
Monthly visitors × conversion rate × close rate × average customer value = monthly revenue from the site. Change the conversion rate and rerun it. That difference, over twelve months, is what the project is worth.
A worked example
Two thousand visitors a month, 1% enquiry rate, 30% close rate, £2,400 average value. That is £14,400 a month. Move the enquiry rate from 1% to 2.4% (a routine outcome from structural work) and it is £34,560. The build pays for itself inside a month.
What this means for how you brief
If conversion rate is the lever, brief for conversion rate. Briefing for "modern and clean" optimises the one variable that is not in the equation.
“If conversion rate is the lever, brief for conversion rate, not for "modern and clean".”
